Pack for the task
The October 16 developer blog explains that constrained inventory is intentional. It presents backpacks primarily as a way to relocate belongings between camps, rather than something to bring on every expedition.
For a crafting trip, decide which construction you are making and carry the relevant materials. The material planner helps combine the costs of several selected items and subtract stock already at camp. It does not simulate bag capacity.
Bags dropped in water
Patch 1.0.47.0, published October 15, lists a fix that makes backpacks and deathpacks wash ashore after falling into water. If a bag disappears, first check your installed version and nearby shoreline. The note does not promise an exact landing point or automatic recovery for every loss that happened on an older save.
Other inventory fixes in that patch
The same update addresses items disappearing when added to partial stacks, swapped or duplicated backpack contents, and deconstructed items falling through floors. Check your build before treating a reproduced older bug as intended design.
We have not tested every recovery case or documented a precise backpack capacity here. Official patch notes establish the listed changes, not a guaranteed repair for an already damaged inventory.
